What is Fire Survival Cable and Where is it Required?
Everything Architects, MEP Consultants & Contractors Need to Know
A fire survival cable (also called a circuit integrity cable or fire resistant cable) is specifically engineered to continue functioning and carrying electrical current even during a fire. Unlike standard FRLS cables which merely slow the spread of fire, a fire survival cable maintains its circuit integrity at temperatures up to 850°C for a specified duration — typically 30, 60, or 120 minutes.
FRLS Cable
Slows fire spread and reduces smoke. Does NOT stay functional during a fire. Used for general wiring.
✅ Fire Survival Cable
Stays functional during a fire for 30–120 minutes. Powers life safety systems. LSZH insulated.
Where is Fire Survival Cable Mandatory?
| System | Why Fire Survival Cable is Required |
|---|---|
| Fire Alarm System | Must remain operational to detect and signal fire |
| Emergency Lighting | Must operate during evacuation in fire conditions |
| Fire Pump Power Supply | Sprinkler and hydrant pumps must run during fire |
| Smoke Extraction Fans | Must operate to clear escape routes of smoke |
